Luciano: I'm Still the Same Guy

Like symbiosis, like the yin and yang, like your left and right hands, there is something both so free and passionate, yet also so technological, somewhat clinical, even precise and methodical about Luciano's music which onlookers always suggest is a reaction to him moving from Switzerland to Santiago, Chile when he was about 11 or 12.

The suggestion that his music is directly correlated to those worlds colliding is not necessarily obtuse. Some parts minimal, deep techno and scientific electro, some parts southern rhythms and colourful melodies, making the identity of his music especially soulful as it seeps from a more alkaline space.

While Luciano's collaborations with Ricardo Villalobos, Pier Bucci and Argenix Brito have possibly resulting in some of the techno's most cherished music and performances, his beginnings promoting Sense Club and Encuentros con la Technocultura in Santiago Chile amongst other local creative initiators like Senor Coconut aka Atom Heart, Washington Miranda, Microman, and more over Dandy Jack & brother Adrian Schopf, became the start of his career.

I feel like my life found a space where I can do something that makes people happy. That's why I'm so addicted, because I need this, completes some parts of me.
Beat Factor: How's life in Ibiza at the moment?

Luciano: Things are great here no1 I really love it, that's why I come here every summer. It's the magic island, I love it!

Beat Factor: How was at the DC 10 opening party, for the ones whom miss the party?

Luciano: It was huge, it was a bomb, really! Everyone was supper happy; it was a really nice atmosphere, so it was really really good.

Beat Factor: This new official compilation it's done – Fabric 41.
Though I know you don't like to make mix CDs, are you happy with the result?

Luciano: I'm actually very happy with the result. I got a very good feedback so far, which was really important for me. Also the guys from Fabric they liked the CD. They said it was a good compromise between what I tried to do and what they expected; they were happy with the whole mix. At the moment everything is cool.

As I said on previous interviews, it's pretty difficult for me to do a compilation. There's a big difference between making a mix CD and playing live, in front of the people. It's a compromise, but is not the end of the world, you know? I decided to do only one mix CD each year, not more.

Beat Factor: Going back to the Ibiza's nightlife, what's happening this summer with the after parties on the island?

Luciano: I think every year they try to make problems to a club and stuff like that. I think this year is the first year when they came to a point that somehow they are affecting the island. This year they said "we're not against closing clubs, we are against the after hour parties". So this is the real change of this year in Ibiza; it's completely banned the whole afterhour culture.

Beat Factor: But this is the entire concept of the DC 10 parties.

Luciano: Yes, exactly, that's one part when they affect the island, because this was one of the concepts in Ibiza. Especially for a party like the ones in DC 10, which would open doors at 8 in the morning, now they suddenly open the club at 4 o clock in the afternoon, so it's difficult.

Beat Factor: In Romania you're considered a king in the past two years. Why? What do you think made you so famous in Romania?

Luciano: Haha, I really don't know. For me, Romania is very special, because of the spirit out there. All the people from Romania which are smiling, the way they live, everything like this makes me react in a very positive way. And I think this can be seen. All the time I'm going to Romania my heart is bumping.

Beat Factor: It's a quite a little problem with all this hype; I've been last year to a party with Carl Craig and there were only 200 people attending; the venue was almost empty.

Luciano: I think this is not only something that comes from me, it is also a big work behind, for example from people like the guys from Sunrise. They really believed in us from the really beginning; they said "forget about the other music, this is the real thing that is going on now!". And they gave us the chance to bring this culture to Romania. So they gave us the right space to do what we know how to do, and the combination between these two things (the hard work from the local promoters and out own music) made this explosion and created a magnetism.

Beat Factor: So a good party is not only about the DJ.

Luciano: No, a good party is about the promoters, the club, there are a lot of factors involved in. The Dj is important, he's going to make the music on the present, but before this there's a lot of work to do to create this moment. So is a combination between the promoter, the club, the people and the DJ.

Beat Factor: Your friendship with Dandy Jack and his little brother made you start DJing. You're also known for working together with him and other DJs at the Narod Niki project.

Luciano: Yes, Martin, Adrian, Ricardo and I were very close and we always believed in what we were doing and so excited about mixing both culture – the Chilean one and the European one. We are still really close to each other and very related to what we do.

We did something official, maybe not that recently, Martin and I had a project called Carabina 33, which was a live act; I remember once when Martin and I played live at a supermarket and it was such a great party. The promoter came down to me and said that I have to play somewhere, but I was like "no, I don't want to". But I went out, played one record and then I stopped it and kept on playing live with Martin. We played together till the end of the party, only live, that was an amazing moment.

Beat Factor: Speaking about the Narod Niki project, what this union of musicians do you think it represents for the electronic music scene?

Luciano: This is more like an undercover project. It was more like trying to create this thing when you never see the same DJs playing. The idea was trying to create one sound out of eight people.

It's pretty hard to get all the people together in the same venue, so Narod Niki only happens once or twice a year. This has to be something special, for special occasion and special moments.

Beat Factor: You're playing music for more than 20 years, but you tasted the real success in the past four years, when everybody started to hear about you and Ricardo Villalobos. How this happened?

Luciano: This is really difficult for me to answer; it's really hard to define this. I can't say why, I've always been true to myself. I don't know why suddenly exploded everything. It's something that I don't control, I'm only trying to be honest in what I do and honest with the people for I play. I'm still the same guy that I was before. I'm happy when I make people happy. I feel like my life found a space where I can do something that makes people happy. That's why I'm so addicted, because I need this, completes some parts of me.

Beat Factor: Cadenza family established as a proper electronic minimal house music record label. How can an up and coming producer become part of this record label?

Luciano: For the whole Cadenza family, the main thing is the music; it always has been this way. I receive a lot of demos and some of them I test it on parties. Our new member, Alex Picone, just fit in the right moment with the right music. There's a lot of new people coming on board as well, so we just try it to keep it as a unique music identity.

Beat Factor: Where do you get these entire gipsies, brazilian and latin influences in your DJ sets and productions?

Luciano: I think there are a lot of influences from the places I'm playing it. Some gipsy influenced come from places like your country; when I'm in the studio or at home I always listen to non electronic music: music like jazz, African, gipsy, South American music. I'm always surrounded by this musical voyages and I try to use elements of music that I'm listening to (not electronic music).
